Franco-German SCAF combat aircraft project abandoned

Germany has announced the discontinuation of the Future Combat Air System (SCAF) project, a joint Franco-German initiative to develop a next-generation combat aircraft. The German government communicated the decision on June 8, with Chancellor Friedrich Merz reportedly advising French President Emmanuel Macron against continuing the program. Launched in 2017 by Paris and Berlin, and later joined by Madrid, SCAF was envisioned as Europe's most significant industrial cooperation endeavor. The project, which aimed to create a comprehensive air combat system, had been a cornerstone of European defense collaboration.
