European Union to begin accession talks with Ukraine and Moldova amid security concerns

The European Union is scheduled to formally commence accession negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova on June 15, opening the "Foundations" cluster which addresses rule of law, public administration, and democratic governance. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized that Europe would find it "extremely difficult" without Ukraine and its experience in countering Russian aggression. This development occurs amidst heightened security concerns, as a UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission report indicated that May 2026 recorded the highest civilian casualties in Ukraine in four years, attributed to continued Russian aggression. Concurrently, a Bundeswehr Space Command Commander raised the possibility that Russia might be developing technology for space-based nuclear warheads, potentially rendering parts of orbit unusable for decades. Separately, reports suggest the United States intends to significantly reduce its military aircraft and warship contributions to NATO operations in Europe, a move European officials fear could diminish NATO's long-range strike and reconnaissance capabilities.
