EU accession talks for Ukraine and Moldova to begin as UN reports record civilian casualties

The European Union has confirmed that accession negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova will formally commence on June 15, with the opening of the "Foundations" cluster, focusing on rule of law and public administration reform. This development was announced by the Cypriot Presidency of the EU Council. Concurrently, the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine reported a significant increase in civilian casualties for May 2026, documenting 274 fatalities and 1,763 injuries, marking the highest monthly total since April 2022. Separately, reports indicate the United States plans to reduce its military assets, including fighter jets and warships, allocated for NATO operations in Europe.
